The Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department’s Polish Your Pearls program provides preventive dental care for children thru 6th grade. We partner with head starts, preschools, and school districts as well as daycare facilities and in home daycares. Funding for this program is provided by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Office of Oral Health and Dentistry. The program offers oral health education, screenings, and the application of fluoride varnish and dental sealants from a Public Health Registered Dental Hygienist. To participate in the program, parents are required to sign a consent form for treatment. Each child screened will be sent home with a referral form indicating if there is a need for urgent or early dental care. All children participating in the program will receive a dental screening, toothbrush, and toothpaste.
Having your child participate in the Polish Your Pearls program can save you money and help prevent dental problems. The fluoride varnish can be applied 4-6 times per year and can decrease further cavity development by 38%. This program does NOT replace your child’s regular dental visits. It is an additional benefit to help prevent dental decay.
